  1. Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery Annual Wreath Laying Event

    The Horton Wreath Society is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to raise funds to place a live evergreen wreath on each marker in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia. 2018 serves as the 11th year the Society has raised funds to honor our veterans and fallen heroes. In 2017, 8,000 live wreaths were placed at the cemetery by over 3,000 volunteers. Our goal this year is to place approximately 9,000 live wreaths and we need volunteers to help us! The Society strives to educate all, especially our youth and future generations, to remember the sacrifices by and to respect our veterans. This is a Free Family Event open to everyone that wishes to volunteer, no registration required, just show up. We will begin with our welcome and laying of the ceremonial row of wreaths at 9:00am.

  2. Great Dismal Swamp Safari

    The Great Dismal Swamp is anything but dismal. The narrated Swamp Safari, one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions, fills up quickly. This four-hour tour is led by a biologist specializing is the unique habitat of the Great Dismal. Learn about the history, lore, vegetation and wildlife with this adventure that includes a brief walk to Lake Drummond. Sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. A small snack and beverage is provided. This tour is not recommended for very small children. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour. Call the Suffolk Visitor Center at 757.514.4130 to reserve your spot.

    The Suffolk Art Gallery's winter exhibit features the work of John Tobin and Al Staszesky. Tobin's work, both ceramic and 2-D, draws influence from daily life, tongue-in-cheek humor, and turn of phrase. His style is distinct and vibrant, with influences from surrealism. Staszesky's style is vibrant and draws from post-impressionism styles, including fauvism and cubism.

  5. Carols and Lullabies of the Southwest

    Virginia Choral Society, in partnership with Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, presents: "Carols and Lullabies of the Southwest." The Virginia Choral Society is a community-based choral group of 80-100 voices singing a wide variety of repertoire. At any given concert, you might hear Broadway choruses, a large choral-orchestral work, jazz standards, folk songs, traditional favorites, or a commissioned work from a local composer. VCS is one of the oldest continuously performing choral organizations in Virginia, having been organized in 1931.

  6. Bring Your Pets to Meet Santa at the Suffolk Visitor Center

    Bring your pet to meet jolly ol' St. Nick! We welcome all friendly, well-behaved critters. Dogs must be leashed. Pet owners are encouraged to bring a donation for the homeless pets at the Suffolk Animal Shelter. The following items are encouraged kitty litter, cat food/kitten chow, dog food/puppy chow, leashes and collars, grooming supplies, toys, crates, towels, blankets, bleach, hand sanitizer & wipes, laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, trash bags and carriers.

    An official Virginia Civil War Trail site, Cedar Hill Cemetery has long been an attraction for history buffs and even walking groups. The Suffolk Division of Tourism offers a guided stroll through the pleasant 32-acre cemetery, rich in history and natural beauty. The 90-minute daytime tour will offer unique insights into Suffolk’s heritage as tour goers traverse the cedar-lined terrain dotted with timeworn headstones.   14. New Year's Eve Bash

    Make plans now to ring in 2019 at the Third Annual New Year’s Eve Bash presented by the Nansemond River Pilot Club and Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront. There is no other place in Suffolk that has a New Year’s Eve party like this.
