Verbal 2 Visual: Artwork Inspired by the works of Kwame Alexander

Friday, May 4, 2018

This spring, Tidewater Reads will celebrate the literary works of Kwame Alexander. Suffolk Art League and Suffolk Art Gallery are again participating in this regional literary collaborative by inviting artists to read Kwame's work and be inspired to create artwork. The exhibit will be held May 4-June 8, 2018, at the Suffolk Art Gallery.

A  native of Hampton Roads, Kwame Alexander is a poet, speaker, educator, and New York Times bestselling author of 24 books, including The Crossover, which received the 2015 John Newberry Medal for the Most Distinguished Contribution to American Literature for Children. Alexander writes his novels in verse, which provides incredible imagery for the artist's imagination. Tidewater Reads will highlight Alexander's latest book, Solo. "Told through bestselling author Kwame Alexander's and Mary Read Hess's expressive and engaging style, Solo is a melodic exploration of friendship, love, heartache, reconciliation, and what it means to finally come home."

This exhibit is open to all artists working in any medium. As the focus is on an author instead of a specific book, the Suffolk Art League and Suffolk Art Gallery ask artists to provide the reference for their artwork including the book title and passage. Work will be juried by the Exhibitions Committee and an invited representative from the local literary community. Cash prizes will be awarded. A reception and awards presentation will be held on Friday, May 4, from 7-9pm.

The complete prospectus can be found at the website ( or below. For additional information, call the Art League office at 757.925.0448, Tuesday-Thursday.
