    This spring, Tidewater Reads will celebrate the literary works of Kwame Alexander. Suffolk Art League and Suffolk Art Gallery are again participating in this regional literary collaborative by inviting artists to read Kwame's work and be inspired to create artwork. The exhibit will be held May 4-June 8, 2018, at the Suffolk Art Gallery.

  2. Exhibit: In Plein Site

    In Plein Site is a must-see exhibit that embraces the spontaneity of plein air painting and ability of artists to capture the essence of downtown Suffolk on canvas. The works featured in this exhibit are the result of a day-long plein air painting adventure on Saturday, May 5, 2018, throughout Downtown Suffolk. The day of painting will culminate in a Crititique and Wet Paint Sale reception from 4:30-6:30pm at the Suffolk Center. The "People's Choice Award" will be presented at that time.   3. Great Dismal Swamp Safari

    May 19, 2018, 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM @ Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

    The Great Dismal Swamp is anything but dismal. The narrated Swamp Safari, one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions, fills up quickly. This four-hour tour is led by a biologist specializing is the unique habitat of the Great Dismal. Learn about the history, lore, vegetation and wildlife with this adventure that includes a brief walk to Lake Drummond. Sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. A small snack and beverage is provided. This tour is not recommended for very small children. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour.   5. American Girl Program: "Meet Grace Thomas"

    Meet Grace Thomas! Nine-year-old Grace is always thinking up big ideas, like starting a business with her friends over the summer! When Mom announces a trip to Paris instead, Grace gets on board, but it quickly seems as if none of her plans are working out the way she'd hoped. She and her French cousin aren't getting along, and Grace's friends back home have started a business without her. Can she find the courage to stay open to new ideas and turn the summer around? There will be 3 sittings: 10am, 11:30am, and 1pm. Space is limited and reservations are required. Donations welcome. Ages 5 and up are welcome.     A free Escape Room based off of the Netflix Original, Stranger Things. The Upside Down has been opened again and this time Eleven is the one trapped inside. Can you find Eleven and make your way out of the Upside Down before the Demogorgon finds you? Race against the clock in Suffolk Public Library's Stranger Things Escape Room! Registration is required and can be made through Eventbrite. Sign up individually or as a team of up to five people per team. For ages 12+. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Each time slot is 30 minutes.

  7. Historic Suffolk Narrated Bus Tour

Suffolk’s rich heritage dates back to the early 17th century, when Captain John Smith first encountered the Nansemond Indians on the Nansemond River. Even now, you can trace Suffolk’s legacy through our historic homes and neighborhoods, churches and Virginia Civil War Trails. Guided by a Suffolk historian, you meet the people and places that made Suffolk the city it is today. Highlights of this windshield tour include Cedar Hill Cemetery, Riddick’s Folly House Museum, Constant’s Wharf, College Court and Suffolk’s Historic Lakeside neighborhood.

The 90-minute daytime tour will offer unique insights into Suffolk’s heritage as tour goers traverse the cedar-lined terrain dotted with timeworn headstones.
