The Great Dismal Swamp is anything but dismal. The narrated Swamp Safari, one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions, fills up quickly. This four-hour tour is led by a biologist specializing is the unique habitat of the Great Dismal. Learn about the history, lore, vegetation and wildlife with this adventure that includes a brief walk to Lake Drummond. Sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. A small snack and beverage is provided. This tour is not recommended for very small children. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour. Suffolk Tourism is partnering with the Suffolk Public Library for a summertime "Storytime at the Station" series. This fun interactive storytelling program is geared toward children ages three to seven. Storytime will be conducted on the porch of Seaboard Station Railroad Museum beginning at 10:30am on Saturdays, June 23, July 21, and August 18. Blankets or beach towels for comfortable seating are welcome. Each month a different book will be read followed by a themed craft and the opportunity to explore the museum (children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Storytime at the Station is free and open to the public. Space is limited and reservations are encouraged.

Suffolk’s rich heritage dates back to the early 17th century, when Captain John Smith first encountered the Nansemond Indians on the Nansemond River. Even now, you can trace Suffolk’s legacy through our historic homes and neighborhoods, churches and Virginia Civil War Trails. Guided by a Suffolk historian, you meet the people and places that made Suffolk the city it is today. Highlights of this windshield tour include Cedar Hill Cemetery, Riddick’s Folly House Museum, Constant’s Wharf, College Court and Suffolk’s Historic Lakeside neighborhood.

An official Virginia Civil War Trail site, Cedar Hill Cemetery has long been an attraction for history buffs and even walking groups. The Suffolk Division of Tourism offers a guided stroll through the pleasant 32-acre cemetery, rich in history and natural beauty. The 90-minute daytime tour will offer unique insights into Suffolk’s heritage as tour goers traverse the cedar-lined terrain dotted with timeworn headstones. Looking for a fun night out? Do you want to stretch your creative muscles? Do you like wine? Then join us at the Suffolk Art Gallery for Paint Class & Wine Glass. This is the perfect night out with friends, a date, or to just plain have fun! Don't worry if you don't know how to paint: our instructor will guide you step-by-step so you can create your own masterpiece! All supplies will be provided as well as light hors d'oeuvres. Non-alcoholic drinks will be available for those who do not wish to partake and for under aged attendees. This class is for ages 16 and up. The fee for the class is $35. Advanced registration is required so please call to save your seat. Registration is available in person at the Suffolk Art Gallery and online at the Suffolk Parks & Recreation Department website.
